Exploring Santa Ana

Santa Ana is the county seat and one of Orange County’s oldest and most culturally rich cities, with a historic downtown, a lively arts scene, and a deep Latino heritage. It packs an unusual concentration of family attractions into a compact area, several of them clustered along Main Street near the freeways. For a day of museums, science, and animals, few OC cities offer more within a short drive.

Bowers Museum

Orange County’s largest and one of its oldest museums, the Bowers opened in 1936 in a Mission Revival building on land donated by citrus grower Charles Bowers and his wife Ada. Its permanent collection tops 100,000 objects, with particular strength in Native American, pre-Columbian, Asian, African, and Pacific art. Over the years it has hosted blockbuster traveling shows, including China’s Terracotta Warriors and ancient Egyptian mummies. A second campus nearby, Kidseum, focuses on younger visitors. Street parking can be found on some days, though a paid lot sits next door.

Discovery Cube Orange County

Impossible to miss from Interstate 5, the Discovery Cube announces itself with a 108-foot cube balanced on one point above the freeway. Opened in 1998 in a former moving-company depot, this hands-on science museum packs in more than 100 interactive exhibits across themed zones covering everything from earthquakes and space to dinosaurs and eco-challenges. Rotating traveling exhibits keep repeat visits fresh. It’s a hit with school-age kids, and the galleries stay busy on rainy days, so a weekday morning is your best bet for room to explore.

Santa Ana Zoo

Affectionately called “the monkey zoo,” the Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park opened in 1952 on land donated by businessman Joseph Prentice, who stipulated the city keep at least 50 monkeys on the grounds at all times. That primate legacy lives on, with species including the pygmy marmoset, the world’s smallest monkey. The compact 20-acre zoo focuses on Central and South American wildlife and adds a children’s farm, carousel, and train ride. It’s ideal for young families and easy to cover in a couple of hours. Santa Ana residents get free admission on the third Sunday monthly.

MainPlace Mall

Anchored by Macy’s and JCPenney, MainPlace Mall has been a Santa Ana shopping fixture since it opened in 1987. The enclosed, three-level center holds well over 100 stores and restaurants spanning fashion, beauty, and dining, and it has leaned into entertainment with additions like Round 1 Bowling & Amusement and a fitness club. Its location at the meeting point of the 5, 22, and 57 freeways makes it one of the easiest malls in the county to reach. Weekday afternoons are the quietest time to shop.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
