Great Park
Built on the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the Orange County Great Park is one of the region’s largest public spaces, filling with sports fields, gardens, trails, and event venues. A Southern California summer staple, Wild Rivers first opened in 1986, closed in 2011, and returned in 2022 at a new home inside the Great Park. The rebuilt park spans more than 20 acres, about 50% larger than the original, with over 20 slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river themed around the 1940s South Pacific. It operates seasonally, roughly May through October, so check the calendar before you go. Cabana rentals and shaded seating help on hot days, and life jackets are provided free.

Designed as a child-sized, interconnected city, Pretend City lets young kids step into grown-up roles across 17 hands-on exhibits, from a farm and grocery store to a health center and marina. It’s geared toward toddlers through early elementary ages. The museum sits just off the 5 and 405 near the Spectrum, and it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan a midweek or weekend visit.
